Last Saturday I headed over to Moments Lotus Yoga studio in Italian town. Entering the studio room, we were greeted by beautiful wide windows looking out on downtown Tianjin and a pair of yoga mats ready for a calming experience . Emma and I had a shared session with Nahal(pictured below in pink). Focusing on calm, deep stretching, the style she taught was described to us as more “Yin” in terms of energy level as opposed to “Yang” focused yoga which is more high intensity.
As an inexperienced yogi, I was assisted when the stretches were too difficult, nicely being guided through while being given some yoga theory and philosophy. The advice given was all relatable with how to cope with life in China.
I got through the session feeling great. I did sweat a little, but there was no “pushing it”. Just deep, calming, wholistic yoga. After the session when I went home, I truly felt more clear thinking, conscientious of myself and thoughts. I even spent a while cleaning up my apartment and working on some projects I had been putting off. It wasn’t until later in the day I felt exhausted. Still thinking clearly, I was physically drained. I went to sleep very early and spent the following day still quite tired. I was not sore, and felt more flexible than I had felt in a long time. The day was spent indoors (it was a smoggy day to be fair) and it was another early night.
Here's what Emma said about the experience:
After a busy working week, my body (especially my shoulders) are filled with pain. I always feel like I just don't have enough energy to go to the gym. As a yoga enthusiast, I practice at home, but usually higher intesity style described by Nahal as "yang". I follow very energetic videos and always push it a little too far. The next day I will always end up injured and hurting too much to stick to a program.
This time, I tried the calmer, "Yin" yoga at Mulian. Nahal gave us "essential oils" and during the stretching, my mind was floating. I felt it was the first time I could really focus on my breathing and clear my mind.
Like Andy, I was very relaxed and fell asleep early that night. The next day I slept a lot more than I usually can. I am very happy to learn the other type of Yoga with Nahal and hope to do it again soon!
