With overwhelming positive comments and requests, we are happy to announce TianjinExpats will be holding seasonal (4 yearly), swapping events.

A special thank you goes to Gina, who helped arrange through her organization to have the unswapped clothes donated to the needy in and around Tianjin. We would like to first write about her foundation to help get out the word.

Looking for a Place to Volunteer?

The Cathay Future Culture and Art Foundation

Volunteering can add an extra special touch to the China experience. If you’re looking for a chance to lend a helping hand and give back to the local community, look no further! The Cathay Future Culture and Art Foundation has been serving children across Tianjin since 1993. The foundation also assists fledgling NGO’s, taking them under their wing and matching them with communities who need volunteer services. In 2015, the Cathay Future Culture and Art Foundation was chosen by the Tianjin government as one of the city’s four official NGOIncubators.

The foundation hopes to expand expat involvement in several community projects. Many of their activities promote English learning, so volunteers without Chinese language ability can also find opportunities to serve. Besides the programs listed below, they also periodically organize events to educate the public on issues such as environmental protection, rare diseases, autism, etc. Some of the current programs in need of volunteers include:

Pediatric Cancer Ward Activities: Each Wednesday afternoon volunteers meet with children at the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital for hour-long play, story and art sessions. They distribute free Hospital Fun Activity Bags containing art supplies, toys and a specially-designed magazine that helps children talk about their feelings and acknowledges them as the brave and determined fighters that they are.

Community Camps and Activities: Focusing on grades K-7, volunteers bring engaging character-building activities directly to neighborhood community centers. These programs break income barriers, as admission is free to all. Full or half day activities run during the summer and winter holidays and after-school activities meet on Tuesday afternoons.

Jixian County ‘Left-Behind Children’:

Approximately six times per year volunteers go to rural Jixian County, assisting the Tianjin Charity Association in a program to help children whose parents who have left in search of jobs. Volunteers also periodically visit lower income rural schools.

TianjinExpat's Swap Recap

The rain held out! The tables and deck filled up with clothes, books and goods as swappers arrived, looking for a deal. The first official swap started things off with a curious passerby deciding to barter for a small tea set. Since he was empty handed at the time, the two agreed on a trade: Tea set for a coffee from Ciao Pizza.

The positive vibe moved inside Ciao Pizza as expats continued to get to know one another and socialize over some food and wine. With the constant good reviews and suggestions for info on the next swap, TianjinExpats is excited to announce the follow up swap will be held sometime in late June/early July. We're open to suggestions on what you'd like the event theme to be. Currently, we are thinking of a kids focused event, but as with this swap, a wide variety of clothes and goods for all ages found their way to happy new owners.

Again, we want to thank everyone that donated and swapped their clothes or came out to socialize and we hope to see you at the next event!
